On February 25, 2022, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rejected all opinions against abolishing the current maximum residue limit of Chlorpyrifos in food, which indicates that EPA will completely ban all chlorpyrifos related food uses.
Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphorus insecticide used in crops including soybeans, fruit and nut trees, broccoli and cauliflower.
However, because chlorpyrifos can inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the body and lead to neurotoxicity, the use of chlorpyrifos has been declining. Many other countries, including the European Union and Canada, as well as some states, including California, Hawaii and New York, have also taken actions to limit the use of Chlorpyrifos in food. Therefore, it has undergone many reviews since its registration in 1965.
