Glyphosate is an effective active chemical ingredient in many herbicides, which can kill weeds and other plants. But some environmentalists believe that large-scale use of glyphosate will destroy biodiversity. The Sri Lankan government announced a total ban on the import and sale of the herbicide glyphosate in 2015, and subsequently exempted the country’s major foreign exchange earning products and industries in the second year, allowing the tea planting sector to continue to import glyphosate as a herbicide.
